| JULY | GREG HUNT - ARTIST
Gallery 370 are delighted to host an exhibition by Yatton artist, Greg Hunt. Greg's main interest is in colour; and this is reflected in his work. He has minimised the form and contents of his paintings in order to concentrate on this aspect. Currently he uses colour to convey movement; and to explore relative values, adjusting the size and distribution of colour fields to achieve a harmonious balance. In the past his paintings have been confined to a circular format. Recently, however, he has reduced their form further, by abandoning complete concentric circles. This move towards ‘fragments' has eliminated restrictions on size and material; and has resolved the issue of defining a physical edge. As a consequence of this, he often uses groups of 'fragments' to construct a single composition. By building up thin layers of Acrylic paint and ink he creates the hard edges and flat surfaces that are central to these paintings. In sharp contrast, Greg is producing a number of drawings based on stone carvings. These tend to be highly detailed and capture the varying texture and quality of the stone. The source material for these are digital photographs. Through successive enlargements they give access to parts of buildings that are usually overlooked. Although strikingly diverse: these two approaches produce an interesting paradox. The paintings are vivid but deliberately avoid content and form: whereas the drawings are representational but, by their nature, lack colour.

| 1 - 30 JUNE | SANDRA BRAIN - ARTIST
We are delighted to present a new exhibition by Sandra in June this year. Sandra has exhibited and sold many of paintings before, but this is her first solo exhibiion. Sandra has been creative for as long as she can remember, drawing and painting at every opportunity. She left college with a Diploma in Display and A' Level Art and began a career in Exhibition and Display. After taking a break to raise children she now works part time for a Digital Fine Art Printing Company and paints whenever she gets a spare moment. Sandra has experimented with various media but keeps coming back to water colours. She says "I love their translucent quality and the way they merge and blend. I often use different materials to create special effects in my abstract paintings". She adds that she is currently exploring texture, light and graphic form. She masks some of her paintings, showing the viewer only part of the image as if looking through small windows, which you can see in her most recent work.

| April 3-28 2007 | GILL SHAW - TEXTILE ARTIST
Works by well known artist, Gill Shaw are currently being shown at Gallery 370, Gill has been developing her specialist art form for over twenty years. Working from observation, sketches and photographs, she creates a multi-layered picture, to be enjoyed both close-up and at a distance. After painting on the fabric, layers of material, fabric, nets, suedes or other materials are then applied by handstitching only, to create the picture. Gill has had a number of solo and joint exhibitions in Tanzania, Kenya, Cyprus and the UK. Her works are now to be found in countries across the world, and in the permanent exhibition collection at the prestigious International “Nature in Art” Gallery at Wallsworth Hall, Twigworth, near Gloucester. Her individually designed pieces are entirely handmade, without any machine embroidery, and often take several weeks if not months to produce. Gill undertakes work on a commission basis, and also exhibits widely across the UK. She is now creating a range of Giclee Limited Edition Print reproductions of some pictures, on Somerset Cotton Rag or German Etching Paper, to make them more widely available. 33 images are now available in this high quality format. |
| 6 - 31 March | ELISE WHITE - WATERCOLOURS
From an early age, Elise White has always loved drawing and painting. She studied at Brunel Technical college from 1992 - 1996, where she gained a BTEC National Diploma and a Higher National Diploma in Design and Illustration. After a break, two years ago Elise took voluntary redundancy from her job and started painting seriously again. She has a fascination with African Wildlife and takes all her own photographs from zoos and wildlife parks around the country as well as collecting photos so she can then create her own original compositions. She paints in Watercolour and likes to experiment with colour sometimes using the pure paint from the tube mix and blending it together on to the paper. Everyone knows that zebras are black and white, elephants grey, but by using alternative colour it gives her paintings a vibrant and contemporary Style. |
| 3 Jan - 3 Mar | Den Ellis (ARPS DPAGB)
Photographer Photography was only black and white when Den got interested so that was a good couple of years ago. He was fascinated how such a detailed image could come from a simple black box with a glass covered hole in the front. The incredible amount of detail produced in a conventional photograph can be a disadvantage in pictorial photography. Den likes to create images that are simple in structure and achieves this by isolating small parts of scenes, using natural distortion by photographing through glass or water and sometimes uses Photoshop to remove detail from the original camera shot.

She has recently had one of her pictures selected for this year's Royal West of England Academy's Autumn Exhibition.

| 1 Nov - 23 Dec | Bob Bishop
"Featured" Photographer for Nov & Dec Following their popular exhibition in 2005, Father and Son team Bob & Chris Bishop are back at Gallery 370 as "featured" photographers for all of November and December (details for each of them are listed separately) Photography has been a hobby of Bobs since his early teens starting with the traditional Box Brownie through many SLR`s to Canon equipment today. Landscape is a favourite of Bob`s, particularly using the first or last hours of sunlight to get that extra special bit into an image. Bob has recently retired and now devotes much more time to his photography. “Being alone in some remote location when the sun first dawns a new day is something rather special. Then to watch and take images as the land is bathed in sunlight, changing almost by every minute, is just such a magical experience. To view ones images afterwards, knowing that you have captured the essence of what was experienced is a constant reminder of those moments and for me makes my photography so much more satisfying. I hope sharing the images will bring enjoyment to you too” Bob photographs for the National Trust and regularly has his work accepted for International Exhibitions.

| 1 Nov - 23 Dec | Chris Bishop
"Featured" Photographer for Nov & Dec Following their popular exhibition in 2005, Father and Son team Bob & Chris Bishop are back at Gallery 370 as "featured" photographers for all of November and December (details for each of them are listed separately) Chris has had an interest in photography from an early age, introduced initially by his father Bob, Chris has then gone on to study photography at G.C.S.E., A-Level and finally foundation level at Filton College. Chris gets most enjoyment out of landscape photography and his love for this is certainly reflected in the quality of his work. “The main aspect I like about landscape photography is being in the great outdoors. I don't really try to capture a picture in any regimented way, I prefer to stand back and let the scenery speak for itself. I like to include size and scale in my pictures too. My favourite time to photograph the landscape is at sunset. I feel that this is when the landscape shows its true beauty and the deep saturated colours in the sky adds an almost mystical feel to the scene.”

| 21 Nov - 2 Dec | Becky Wills - Fused Glass Artist
Becky Wills, a Fused Glass Artist, is a self confessed glassaholic and regularly displays her fused glass jewellery here at Gallery 370, in fact she is currently the most popular jeweller at the Gallery, our customers just can't get enough of her designs. So we are extremely pleased to be showcasing Becky's hanging glass art at her forthcoming exhibition here. As a child, whilst her friends wanted to be ballet dancers, vets or air hostesses when they grew up, she wanted to be a glass-blower or a ‘stained-glass-window-maker'. She collected hundreds (literally) of marbles, and pieces of glass washed up on the beach, they were like precious stones to her. Six years ago Becky finally found time to do some evening classes, and loved doing copperfoil panels. Desperate to work with hot glass, she managed to do a couple of glass blowing courses only to find that it was too hot and heavy, and that she lacked the co-ordination to blow and roll the punty rod in unison! Fusing glass in a kiln seemed to be the perfect amalgamation of the two skills she desired most. Glass fusing being a relatively new art media, means there is so much yet to discover and experiment with that it really is very exciting. She enjoys teaching others in her workshop. Newcomers manage to come up with spectacular colour combinations and new techniques without even trying! Becky says “Glass technology is always moving on and there are always new things to try out” – so watch this space. |

| 10 Oct-21 Oct | Peter Howe
Painter Peter studied at the West of England College and works in oils and acrylics. He chooses subjects for their visual impact where he can add excitement with strong light and shade. His work has been exhibited locally as well as in London, Europe and the USA. He was recently selected from over 10,000 artists world wide to be one of the launching artists for a new online gallery in the USA. |
| 10-21 Oct | Alex Blake
Photographer At 16 years of age, Alex is a very talented and budding young Photographer with an excellent eye for an image. Having just left school, he is now studying Art, Philosophy, Ethics, History & English Literature at Churchill Sixth Form college. He was chosen for an exhibition after submitting work on a CD. Alex particularly enjoys taking photographs of Landscapes but he also enjoys photographing buildings. Alex says “I love being able to practice photography out in the countryside, where I can take my time and there are no distractions such as cars. Being alone with nature and a camera can be amazing. As well as this, I love rustic buildings, full of cracked paint and dust. These places have such a wonderful atmosphere; I could stay and take photos of these buildings for hours”. Alex would love to take photographs like the Greek Photographer Georges Meis, or like Michel Chavarria (a famous photographer & founder & president of LAG Guitars). He interviewed him for an internet art magazine. Alex finds their images truly inspirational. When he first started taking photos, he didn't really have any inspirations, he just wanted to get out and take photos. At first he borrowed his Mum's camera and then brought his own. He has a Traveler DC-5300 compact camera but plans to buy a Canon EOS350D sometime in the near future. He prefers Digital to film as the feedback is much quicker and per-shot it is cheaper. Alex would love to have a successful career in photography but is also interested in other fields of art such as graphic design. Alex's family have been very supportive of his photography and his Aunt in particular has encouraged him. So when he saw an advertisement outside Gallery 370 for exhibitions, he decided to try and get himself booked in. Gallery 370 owner, Georgina remarks "when I first saw Alex's work, I did not know his age. Having spoken with him at a later date, and finding out his age, I was impressed with his determination and focus and felt he deserved some encouragement in this competitive art form". |
| 26 Sep - 7 Oct | JENNIFER DAVIDSON B A (Hons.) Fine Art Artist Jennifer went to Art School straight from school determined to fulfil her childhood ambition to be a Fashion Designer. An added training in dressmaking and pattern cutting further assisted the achievement of this goal. She worked successfully in London and Paris for many years before being tempted into the exotic world of international Interior Design. |
This was challenging work- designing and producing sumptuous and elaborate curtain treatments for millionaires and princes who also wanted their rooms hand painted as rag-rolling, sponging, stippling and stencilling were all the rage then. Always working away from home, mostly in the South of England, but also in Switzerland, India and in a brand new castle in the Highlands of Scotland- often in very remote places was very exciting but the best day of her week was a Monday when she joined a painting class with Barry Paine at Chew Stoke. In 1992 Jennifer was accepted as a full-time student at The University of The West of England, graduating 3 years later with an Honours Degree in Fine Art. Since then she has concentrated on her painting at her local studio, with only the occasional foray back to the world of Interior Design. Jennifer says “all of my previous career experience has influenced my present work. I look at far horizons rather than what is close at hand. My landscape paintings reflect my fascination with pattern, rhythmic and interlocking shapes, rich colour and often have pathways snaking away into the far distance. In recent work my preferred medium is soft pastel. It is a natural choice for one who has always drawn. No brushes, mixing or drying time to slow down the creative process! Every painting is a potential journey, an exploration of accumulated ideas - a new pathway, some of which unfortunately go nowhere! ” |
| 12-23 Sep | Deryll Hibbitt
Textile Artist Deryll is inspired by the things around her - the sea, the landscape and it's plants especially the neglected and less loved ones such as nettles and ivy. Her techniques for each piece vary but she uses natural fabrics, then this may be coloured by painting, printing or dyeing using plant or chemical dyes. The fabric is then manipulated in some way, often by tearing and weaving, but she always add stitch in some form. Deryll has exhibited for the last 10 years with Gordano Textile Artists and for a few years with the Guild of Somerset Craftsmen at their Gallery in Dunster. Deryll also has some handmade bags for sale in the gallery shop.

| 22 Aug-2 Sep | Gail Clarke
Painter Gail Clarke started painting at the age of forty when she treated herself to a beginner's painting weekend in Dartmouth, and got the bug!!! She was encouraged by a friend do a two year Art and Design access course which she loved. Four years ago Gail moved back to the West Country from Herefordshire and the opportunity to have a studio at the Clevedon Craft Centre presented itself and since then when she is not working as a Dental Hygienist she paints. Gail says "I am inspired by the sea and skies, colour, humour and by my passion for improving as an artist, I mostly work in Acrylics/mixed media on canvas, paper, board and anything I get my hands on!" Gail also has a range of cards which are for sale in the gallery shop and the odd commission keeps her out of mischief! Gail has exhibited in various local exhibitions both here and in Hertfordshire and of course, her work can be seen at her studio at Clevedon Craft Centre which also serves as a gallery. | 22 Aug-2 Sep | Mel Beacham

He has painted throughout Europe, including the South of France, Southern Spain, the Algarve and the Mediterranean coast. Mel uses Acrylics and mixed media on board, canvass, and wood panels. He describes his work as "wall furniture" fun and bold paintings.

Howard Litchfield "Kill the Last Romantic"
Guest Artist from Brighton "Blisters on the Lips of Cupid: New Paintings" Howard Litchfield's paintings explore the boundaries between Fine Art and Mass Culture and between Sexuality and Commodity. ‘Sketched' using computer manipulation and then executed by hand, Howard's current series of paintings create playful juxtapositions that question the values that images of the male body hold in the globalised society, drawing on a diverse range of sources including medieval woodcuts and altar paintings, modernist art and Japanese Manga comics. Howard lives and works in Brighton and lectures in Art History and Film Studies throughout Sussex . |
| 8-19 Aug | Nick Sparks LRPS, HND Fine Art
Digital Artist Nick draws his inspiration from the scenes around him, working with digital media from his own original photographs and drawings, with a reflection into past representationalism, trying to make subtle comment on our culture. He embraces new technology, new ways of creating images and art, as fellow artists have done long before him. The computer's logic can present and allow manipulation of an image on it's screen, to an incredible degree, but it has no concept of how things should be, that is left to the artist. He has recently completed his degree in Fine Art at Bristol UWE. During his degree he worked on large scale portrait painting using mediums including oils, acrylics, marker pens and aerosol paint. “My paintings are usually of images that i find interesting as a composition, and come from a variety of sources. They often have a quality similar to glossy photo imagery from magazines. I have been influenced by both fashion photography and American photo realist painters.” Jed has a natural talent for capturing the essence of the person he is painting. He adds his unique style, and use of bold and often vivid colours to create often memorable pieces. His work has been exhibited in the R.W.A and at Spike Island in Bristol, and in North Somerset Arts Week. He held his post-degree show at Leeky Gallery in Bristol, where he has also exhibited alongside contemporary graffiti artists. | 13-24 Jun | Robyn Coetzee
Fused Glass Wall Art Robyn was born in South-African but is now living in Bristol. Robyn says that for her, glass is a new medium for exploring the aesthetics of shape and colour in relief. As well as glass she has been making pieces using acrylic paint and metal. During the creative process the glass is cut to shape, placed in layers and fired in a kiln until it fuses together. I use special dichroic glass, which reflects and disperses light in unique ways, as a means to highlight shape and colour within the design. The final glass piece is mounted on board to create a piece of wall art. Robyn also makes beautiful handmade Jewellery which is for sale in the gallery shop. |

Her most recent public commission was “Joseph's Coat” for Education Leeds. Caroline's preferred medium is paint on silk with embroidery & appliqué; the intensity of silk paint being similar to stained glass. Her early work was influenced by the geometric imagery of Native American Art but more recently she has been developing themes closer to nature with abstract ideas drawn from birds & animals. Other ideas have evolved from wind farms, sails and sea creatures. Caroline also has hand painted silk scarves and hand stitched bags in the Gallery shop for sale. |
